What the Internet Knows About You…

What the Internet Knows About You

Ever wonder what web sites can figure out about your computer, web browser, and your identity? You may be surprised at what you find out!

Here are some links worth checking out that will show you what is being revealed about your Internet browsing history, and if your router or firewall is truly doing its job:

  • What the Internet Knows About You – This page checks your browser history and determines which Internet websites you’ve recently visited.
  • Stay Invisible Online _ Stay Invisible is an Internet anonymity test that helps you to control your online privacy and anonymity.
  • Shields Up! – Determine what ports through your firewall, router or even computer (depending on your setup) are publicly visible.

If you are surprised or even alarmed as how much information is revealed about you and your browsing habits, there are some steps you can take to help:

If you find that What the Internet Knows About You reveals a lot of web sites and information, it may be time to check and/or change your browser privacy settings and re-verify the results afterward. If you are using Internet Explorer, it may be worth trying a better or more secure web browser. We recommend Mozilla Firefox.

If you find that there are many ports open on your computer or router, it may be time to learn a little about this and change some router security settings, turn on your Windows or other software firewall, or install a good security suite like Trend Micro Internet Security. You can find a great deal on Trend Micro software at Computer’s Worth, a Texas based software company. You can usually find a 3-user, 1-year license for less than $20, and you can either download the software yourself, or get it sent to you with free shipping!

TIP: At the end of the year subscription, Trend Micro will start to alert you that your subscription is about to expire. This is no reason to panic; all it means is that when the time runs out, you won’t be able to get new virus and malware definition updates. The software will still protect you.

When you see these messages, it’s time to return to Computer’s Worth to get a new license key and download the latest version of the software. You can usually just go into the program settings and put a new license key in to re-activate for an additional year for a very low price. If you upgrade through the software it can cost you 3-4 times as much per computer!

Hope you find this useful…
